We have opportunities for Individuals and Groups, as well as for Adults and Youth. Volunteers are an important part of how the United Way meets our community's needs.
Teen Court is a diversion program designed for juvenile offenders to teach them about the justice system and the consequences of their actions before they become a part of the traditional justice system. Teen Court is an actual sentencing hearing for 12-17 year olds who have already admitted guilt in the crime they committed. Teen Court provides a place for teens to volunteer. The Student Advisory Board (STAB) is made up of students around the community that volunteer their time to play roles found in the traditional court system (lawyers, bailiffs, clerks, jury foreperson). STAB members work to determine fair consequences for offenders. Teen Courts utilizes adult volunteers as well. Adult volunteers work with the Juvenile Justice Specialist to prepare for court, assist in shoplifting workshops, be a mentor for offenders, and play the role of judge for proceedings.

If you are 11-15 years old, you can participate in the Leaders of Tomorrow program (registration occurs in May). This is a summer youth volunteer program that has two 4-week sessions. Leaders of Tomorrow participants pick an agency they would like to help out and spend 4-6 hours a week volunteering their time. Participants work alone or in a group. Volunteers may also participate in the Holiday Giving Tree. Between Thanksgiving and Christmas we have trees set up in various locations (i.e., MCL Cafeteria), which display ornaments with donation and volunteer needs of local nonprofit agencies. Groups and individuals can participate in the program. Age restrictions are based on the participating agencies.
