How do I know what volunteer project is right for me?
Do you agree with the mission, values and beliefs of the organization? They shouldn't conflict with your own. Do you have the qualifications to do what is asked of you, if not can you be trained in what you need to know?
What is the quickest and simplest way to volunteer or find out about volunteer opportunities?
In the Greater Lafayette community...
You're already here. Look at the volunteer opportunities on our web page for individuals or groups. Up to date listings are also available in booklet form. Our column is a third way to find out more. Written every Friday, it appears in both the Journal and Courier and the Lafayette Leader. Finally, you can contact the Greater Lafayette Volunteer Bureau by telephone (765)742-8241 or e-mail vsc@glvb.org.
In other communities...
Contact you local volunteer center. The Points of Light Foundation has a list of volunteer centers nation-wide. You can get in touch with them by calling 1-800-VOLUNTEER. You can also contact your local United Way, Chamber of Commerce or nonprofit agency you would like to help.
What happens when I call a local volunteer center?
Not all volunteer centers work the same way. At the Greater Lafayette Volunteer Bureau you will speak to a friendly, helpful staff person who will ask about your interests, skills and talents, and what type of volunteer opportunities you are seeking. Then they will gladly direct you to a volunteer opportunity.
Are there short-term or one-time opportunities?
Yes. Opportunities change frequently. To find out what and where they are, refer back to FAQ number 3.
