- Get a written volunteer job description.
- Visit the organization, including where the volunteers work.
- Find out if the organization's environment fits your personality by talking to staff and other volunteers, past and present if possible.
- Be realistic and clear about what you tell the organization you can give.
- Ask about volunteer training.
- Know if you agree with the organization's core values and beliefs.
- Learn the benefits of volunteering for the organization, its clients and its volunteers.
- Know if there are any restrictions or requirements associated with the job.
- Determine if you have the qualifications, skills and talents needed for the job.
- Make sure your schedule and the amount of time you have to give matches what is needed.
- Know who to go to for assistance and guidance.
When you are ready to start volunteering you can either participate in one of our volunteer programs or you can work with a local non-profit agency to fulfill a need.
